Jeb Dunnuck Notes

98 Points, Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck.com: "A rich magenta hue, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Poggio Al Granchio is a serious wine that amplifies things further and will need some decanting if opening now. Forward with great aromas of graphite, black cherry liqueur, cracked pepper, sage, and porcini, it’s full-bodied yet weightless on the palate and has phenomenal concentration while remaining elegant all the way through, it offers plush, velvety tannins and mineral undercurrents while retaining wonderful purity and a seamless texture. This stunning wine deserves several years in cellar. Drink 2026-2046." 02/24

Wine Advocate Notes

95 Points, Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From a site with schistic galestro clay soils, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Granchio is definitely the most complete and complex of these new releases from 2019 by Val di Suga. Fruit comes from an 18-hectare vineyard located at 430 to 450 meters in elevation. The wine offers more oozing richness and concentration in line with the character of the vintage with sweet cherry, blackberry, toasted cumin seed and pressed rose. This estate does a good job of maintaining the freshness of Sangiovese. Some 12,000 bottles were made." 12/23

Kerin O’Keefe Notes

95 Points, Kerin O'Keefe, KerinOKeefe.com: "The 2019 Val di Suga Brunello Poggio al Granchio boasts heady aromas of menthol, leather, juniper and violet. On the savory, full-bodied palate, notes of iron, bitter almond and licorice accent dried cherry and bitter orange. Enveloping, close-grained tannins provide support. Drink 2029–2039. Abv:" 11/23

Vinous Media Notes

95 Points, Eric Guido, Vinous: "The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Granchio pulls the taster close to the glass to take in its beguiling aromatics. Rose and clove aromas give way to cinnamon-dusted red currants and a lifting hint of camphor. It’s elegant in style with silken textural depths and ripe wild berry fruits that saturate, all balanced by a stream of brisk acidity. Saline minerals stain the palate as the 2019 finishes long and structured. It holds its power in reserve as a pleasantly bitter tinge mingles with fine-grained tannins to create a youthfully tense sensation. This is a Poggio al Granchio for the ages. Bury your bottles deep." 11/23

Decanter Notes

94 Points, Michaela Morris, Decanter: "Looking southeastward to Monte Amiata, Poggio al Granchio reaches 450 metres on slatey Galestro soil. The area is characterised by warm days and cool nights giving firmly structured wines. As such, large French oak barrels are used for ageing to encourage some oxygen ingress. A virile wine, the 2019 opens with smoky ash, incense and iron. The well-built palate broods with blackberry and black currants wrapped up in dusty, dry stony earth. Piercing, gravelly tannins spatter the mouth while acidity provides a tangy crunch. Trails off gradually with a rust-like aura." 11/23

James Suckling Notes

93 Points, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com: "Pretty cherries and chocolate with some violets that follow through to a medium body with fine tannins and an orange-peel finish. Refined and pretty. Drink or hold." 09/23
