A creamy and juicy red with cedar and meat to the plum and berry undertones. It’s medium-to full-bodied, fruity and flavorful. Hints of fudge and hazelnuts. Very drinkable now, but better after 2022.

The 2016 Barolo La Rosa is another attractive wine from Fontanafredda. Sweet, perfumed aromatics and mid-weight structure convey grace. But there is good depth and fine balance, too. Crushed flowers, red berry fruit, mint, spice and subtle earthy notes linger. La Rosa is pretty delicate, but I would still cellar it for a few years, as the tannins need to soften.

Ripe cherry, leather, iron and tar flavors mark this dense, vibrant red. All the components are here, but this needs some time to come together. The fruit and tannins dovetail on the long finish. Best from 2022 through 2036.
