Dark and dense, with fig bread, baker's chocolate and tar notes leading off before the core flavors of plum, black currant and blackberry paste finally start to emerge. The wild, spirited finish shows cast iron, licorice snap and roasted alder elements, delivering a decidedly chewy feel. A big, old-school, throwback Port that will age at a glacial pace. Best from 2035 through 2060

James Molesworth - Wine Spectator (97)

Fonseca was founded in 1815, and has cemented itself as one of the top Port houses in operation today. Their Vintage Ports are legendary for their richness, complexity, and ability to age. The house has always had a strong connection with the vineyards, and were actually one of the first to utilize organic and sustainable viticulture in its vineyards. The Vintage Ports are made from grapes grown on their own quintas (estates): Cruzeiro, Santo Antonio and Panascal, all of which make their own style of Vintage Port that adds to the final wine.

The 2017 has a garnet ring around a deep, opaque purple core. The nose is filled with black woodland fruits mixed with fresh red berries and a slate-like minerality alongside notes of balsamic, cedar and sandalwood. The palate is dense and tightly wound with stunning concentration of dark berry fruits that explode into a nearly eternal finish. Round and velvetty on the palate but with crisp acidity, the 2017 is layered, complex and powerful. This wine will age beautifully and can be enjoyed from 2027 to 2060.
