The Les Barres vineyard is situated on the village's most well-draining soils. The sands have allowed the vines to be protected from Phylloxera, so we can have some Meunier vines and a new planting of Chardonnay without grafted rootstock. This soil requires the wine grower to minimise, to the extent possible, the number of times he passes by to work it. The sands compact easily, and this soil is too fine to be ploughed. We therefore limit the working of this soil to a strict minimum, (before winter under the base of the vines), then leave the grass in place to preserve the soil's structure and bearing capacity. The grass is cut exclusively by hand (with a string trimmer) to limit compaction, while plants are pruned with the objective of promoting a good distribution of the sap flow (preservation of the plants over time). The appearance of various natural grasses helps me understand the soil's health and condition; we then adapt our intervention to the message delivered by nature.
